5 Tips on Making Beautiful Candles Using Cheap Candle Jars At Home

Love is beautiful, but these days it often comes with high expectations; expensive gifts, monthly allowances, and more. Yet, one timeless romantic gesture remains simple: a romantic dinner night. The place or menu doesn't mean much. The gesture alone speaks volumes. But no romantic dinner is complete without the warm glow of scented candles, which help set the perfect mood.

Candles can be pricey, but they don’t have to be. With the right knowledge, you can make beautiful candles at home using old jars in under 30 minutes, saving money while adding a personal touch to your evening.

Here are 5 easy steps on how to make your cheap candle jars at home. But before we go into the steps, the following materials are required.

  • Electric kettle

5 Tips on Making Beautiful Candles Using Cheap Candle Jars at Home

When you have the materials listed above, proceed as follows:

1.   Gather and Prepare Your Jars

The first step is to collect and clean your Orcio jars. You can also use your old empty jam jars, pickle jars, honey jars or your old candle jars; they all work perfectly. Clean them using soap and water, hot or warm water preferably. Do well to peel off labels from the jars for a uniform clear look.

Some labels may be hard to peel off. Just soak them in hot water for a while and off they will go. This also works perfectly for cleaning old candle jars with wax stuck in them. Once you're done cleaning the jars, allow them to dry for some minutes.

2.   Prepare the Wicks

Measure the width of each jar to determine the appropriate wick size. Buying wicks suited to your jar size ensures an even burn. Secure each wick to the centre of the jar using hot glue, and keep the wick upright by wrapping the extra length around a skewer or chopstick placed over the top of the jar to keep it straight during the cooling process.

3.   Melt the Wax

You can melt new wax or even reuse old wax from your previous candles. Available waxes include paraffin wax, beeswax and soy wax. If using new wax, place it in a microwavable container and heat it in one-minute intervals, stirring occasionally to ensure a smooth melt. For repurposed wax, use the same method and melt enough to fill smaller jars.

4.   Determine the quantity of wax needed

Before pouring the wax, it's important to determine how much wax you need for each jar. You can pour as much wax as you wish just don't fill up the entire jar. About ⅔ of the jar is okay. For a uniform measurement, pour the melted wax into a measuring cup and take a measurement before pouring into the jar. This way, you have a uniform amount of wax in all the jars.

5.   Pour and Let Set

This is the last and probably the most important part. Here you can either make a regular candle jar or you can get creative and make an extraordinary but cheap candle jar.

For your regular candle jar, pour in the melted wax into the jars using a small flexible cup to avoid spilling. Let the wax cool and once set, cut the wick to ¼ inch and that's it! Your candle jars are ready for use.

On the other hand, if you wish to take your candle jars making to another level, you can switch things up by doing the following;

  • Adding fragrance

Add some fragrance while the wax is still in liquid form and stir to mix. You can use a single fragrance or you can mix two or more. Remember the more the fragrance, the more the scent.

  • Customising your candles

Another way of giving your candle jars a professional touch is by adding colours. Dissolve the dyes in the liquid wax and mix thoroughly for a uniform blend before pouring. You can even go further by pouring different layers of colours in one jar, creating a beautiful blend of colours.

  • Customising your jars

Aside from customising your candles, you could also add some designs to your Orcio jars. You can paint the jars to suit your decor or even tie ribbons around them to depict the celebration mood.

You can also write on the jars using paint. You could inscribe romantic words such as “I love you” or “You're beautiful” on the body of the jars. These inscriptions will be reflected as the candles burn and the view will definitely be awesome.

Cleaning Up

When you are done pouring the wax, it is time to clean up. It would help to have papers or towels spread on the table or wherever you're pouring the wax so as to catch any drops and prevent it from defacing your floor. Any hardened wax spills on the floor or table can be removed with hot water and a little scrubbing.

Now you can light your beautiful candles made from cheap candle jars at home and have an unforgettable time with your partner.
